McGeady: "I'm Loving It"

10 March 2017

Aiden McGeady deservedly picked up the Sky Bet Championship player of the month award for February after an impressive spell for North End.

The Republic of Ireland international has quickly become a fan favourite at Deepdale due to his exploits on the pitch since joining the club back in August, but February was on a different level with the winger scoring three goals and setting up four for his teammates.

After collecting the award, the 30-year-old was pleased to be recognised for his form but insisted the form of the team has been the most important.

"It's a great accolade to get and to see your form recognised. I do think I've been pretty consistent the whole season but obviously a few goals and a few assists grab the headlines. The main thing is that the team has been doing well.

"I'm enjoying my football again. Just playing games again really, I had sort of forgotten what I could play like because I hadn't really played that much.

"It's a good environment to play my football in and I'm loving it."

After a tough couple of years struggling for game time, McGeady has flourished under PNE boss Simon Grayson and is grateful to have been given a run of games to show what he can do, something he feels is important for any player.

"You can't be expected to come in and play two games and show your best form, you might, but the chances are you probably won't.

"Most players need seven or eight games, an extended run in the team to know that they don't have that pressure of needing to perform today or you won't play again.

"You need to get comfortable with the environment, playing with teammates, working up and understanding with certain players on the pitch, that's the way I see it.

One thing that has contributed to McGeady's form has been the terrific support from the North End faithful who regularly sing his name both home and away.

On the fans, Aiden continued: "I said a couple of weeks ago that it's been a while since I've had fans singing my name but it's one of those where you hear the fans singing your name during the game and it gives you a bit of confidence and I appreciate it massively.

"It shows that the fans have taken to me and I've taken to them as well and for any player to hear that it shows that you are doing something right.

"It makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up a little bit when you hear it so it's great. When I hear it during games sometimes I can't always give them a little thanks because the game is going on but I hear it and I appreciate it."
