Hugill Hoping For More Derby Day Delight

16 February 2017

With a terrific goalscoring record in the local derbies last season, Jordan Hugill is hoping to continue that form against Wigan Athletic on Saturday.

The striker scored in the away derby victories against Blackburn Rovers and Bolton Wanderers last season, and was on the scoresheet as North End beat the Latics earlier this year at Deepdale.

Hugill is hoping to make it another derby day to remember for the sell out away following this weekend as PNE look to end a fantastic week on a high after back to back wins at Deepdale.

Speaking ahead of the clash, the 24-year-old said: "The gaffer said to get as many points as we can out of these three games coming up and hopefully we can make it nine points against Wigan at the weekend.

"We have a big following coming as well so it will be a brilliant day.

"The fans have always been good on derby days, especially the away ones, they are always in great voice.

"I remember Bolton away last season, we almost had the full end behind the goal and it was a great day so I'm looking forward to it personally and I'm sure the fans will be as well.

On his form against the local rivals, Hugill put it down to knowing just how important derby days can be for supporters after enjoying them himself growing up.

"I can only put it back to when I was a kid and going to the derby games back in Middlesbrough. The Middlesbrough games against Newcastle and Sunderland were always the big games and as a fan I loved to be involved in those days, especially if your team won as well!

"It's a big thing for fans and I think that only transpires onto the pitch for the players as well."

After scoring the winner on Tuesday night against Birmingham City, Hugill made it double figures for the season with ten goals to his name. The frontman now has more than last season's top scorer and is delighted with his recent form but won't be getting complacent.

"I've been looking to score more goals this year and I feel as though I've done well. My performances have been good as well so far so I'm delighted to now get into double figures and hopefully there's more to come as well.
