Another Clean Sheet Pleases Callum Roberts

20 March 2017

Callum Roberts reflected on a positive couple of weeks for him on an individual level after the youth team’s 3-0 win against Wrexham on Saturday.

The victory made it three consecutive clean sheets for the goalkeeper, who had also completed shutouts in a 1-0 win over Blackpool and goalless draw with Bury earlier this month.

“It is satisfying as a goalkeeper,” the second-year scholar said of the recent defensive record. “In the back four and as the ‘keeper, we all aim to get a clean sheet and as long as we do our job, I’m sure the strikers and the forwards will do theirs.

“I think if we can just keep going, hopefully we can get a fourth next week playing Wrexham again.

“We take it week by week but it’s great to get clean sheets and obviously, it looks better on us as a team.”

The goalkeeper has now prevented the opposition from scoring on 11 separate occasions this season.

But as well as being in a good run of form on the pitch, the 18-year-old was last week recognised by the League Football Education (LFE) in ‘The 11’ for March – which awards young players for making progress on and off the pitch.

“It’s obviously a big achievement for me and I felt very proud of it. But I think it needed the team to get me there and I’m thankful for what everyone has done to help me get there.

“I’m proud and take everything step-by-step to get the next achievement.”

Roberts also highlighted the team’s encouraging display in the triumph over Wrexham.

“The momentum is with us and I think the back four we had were brilliant today.

“I thought we played very well. We tried to get the ball down and when we did we played some good football and I thought as a team we were superb.”
