Burnley 0 PNE 2

Goals from Will Keane and Daniel Johnson gave the Lilywhites a derby day to savour at Turf Moor with second half strikes in stormy conditions.

Keane opened the scoring just after the hour mark with a superb run and drilled shot through Tom Heaton and then Johnson slotted home from Joe Garner’s excellent pull back with four minutes left on the clock.

Both sides made one change in attack, with Will Keane replacing Eoin Doyle for North End and Sam Vokes into the home side’s line-up after injury.

The home side enjoyed plenty of possession early on, but without testing Jordan Pickford, in fact despite Burnley’s early dominance it was North End who had the first two clear cut chances.

A Marnick Vermijl long throw 17 minutes in was flicked on by Keane and Joe Garner met the ball on the volley, only for it to be deflected over the bar by Clarets veteran defender Michael Duff.

Soon after yellows’ skipper Tom Clarke saw a shot deflected over the bar from 15 yards out, again after a Keane lay off from Daniel Johnson’s ball in from the right.

Sean Dyche’s side’s best opportunity came 11 minutes before the break, when Jordan Pickford saved from Vokes’ volley from 12 yards out, the on loan stopper tipping the ball onto the top of the bar, with Paul Gallagher completing the clearance.

Four minutes into the second half and Tom Heaton had to be right behind a volley from Alan Browne after a long ball forward had held up in the wind allowing Keane to bring it down for the Irishman.

Pickford denied Barton from a 25 yards free kick, after a soft foul had been given against Paul Gallagher in a left hand channel and then Andrew Gray dragged a shot wide after a clever corner routine, before the hour mark.

But on 64 minutes the visitors were ahead. Some excellent play down the left saw North end work the ball into Will Keane. He had a lot to do, 40 yards out, but drove at the heart of the defence sliding past his brother before drilling the ball past Heaton from 15 yards out.

Joe Garner had a great chance to double the lead before the half-way point of the second period as Marnick Vermijl got down the right and brilliantly took out the defence with a reverse pass for Garner, but his left foot shot skewed wide.

Joey Barton somehow managed to stay on the pitch with 13 minutes to go; having already been booked he took out Tom Clarke long after the ball had been played up field.

Daniel Johnson curled a left footed effort inches past the left hand post with Heaton scrambling as the game went into the final ten minutes.

And with four minutes to goal the lead the doubled. Another long ball over the top was collected by Joe Garner, who raced past Matthew Lowton to the byline before pulling it back to Daniel Johnson, who drilled home his eighth goal of the season from eight yards out, before they comfortably saw out the remaining time for the win.
